![]() The 2019 Pride Houston celebration drew a record crowd of almost 700,000 people to downtown Houston, the largest in the city's history, according to Mayor Sylvester Turner. Last year's Pride Houston celebration was a virtual rally with no public access due to rising COVID-19 cases. Several pop-up events are scheduled throughout June, including the premiere of "Ailey," a documentary that chronicles the life of dancer Alvin Ailey a Pride market at Karbach Brewing and a pool party. The City of Houston won't finalize the required permits for Pride Houston until later this month. But the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic caused permit delays. Thursday, Houston-based nonprofit The Normal Anomaly Initiative announced its lineup for the first Black Queer+ Advancement Festival, happening April 30, from 3-7 p.m. The original plan was to resume a summer celebration this year. Dates and events will be announced July 25 at the kick-off and theme reveal party at Pearl Bar. Pride Houston plans to celebrate in the fall, according to Lorin "Lo" Roberts, the organization's executive director. But it'll be much cooler under the rainbow. Houston's Pride festival and parade are indeed happening this year.
